The Boozehound Gandy Dance consists of monologues, comedy, satire and a lot of music--original & traditional songs and occasionally contemporary covers are woven into the fabrics of the show. A lot of our material is based around Knoxville and Appalachia. We fancy the Southern Gothic landscapes that surround us and we love to talk about it. We're inspired by kudzu, vaudeville, americana-folk music, railways, moonshine and coal mines. The Boozehound Gandy Dance made its debut at the Mary Boyce Temple House in June 2007 to an overwhelming crowd. Two follow-up shows were scheduled the following month to equal success. The Temple House, under renovations, helped give the show a juke-joint atmosphere while providing the public with another chance to see the house, as well as the show, as a work in progress. The show has since been performed at Ironwood Studios, World Grotto, The Birdhouse, University of Tennessee, The Bijou Theatre and on the streets of Knoxville. Boozehound Gandy Dance performances contain adult themes, comedic references to alcohol and drugs, cultural, political and local satire. We don't consider ourselves a "family" show and we suggest you get a babysitter if you're thinking about bringing the kids. However we're not ones to tell you how to raise the young'ns so if you think the material will "fly over their heads" or that they can handle it...bring 'em on!
Premise
Charles "Chaz" Amos Davenport IV, a superstitious son of undertakers,
finds himself homeless and alone one day. Not knowing what to do Chaz
packs a bag and heads out, by foot, on the open road. He doesn't get far
before he makes friends with a group of outlaw hobos and gypsies. Chaz,
not understanding the concept of not working, helps the group earn money
for liquor and leftovers by organizing their talents into a show. Together they
try to make a living by singin', dancin', trampin' and boozin'.
